Sailor King of Pen Color Urushi Kaga is completely hand turned and polished from Ebonite. The Ebonite product is then specially hand painted with 8-12 coatings of genuine Urushi lacquer.
The application of the Urushi has been expertly hand painted by the famous "Kaga" Maki-e artist, Mr. Masatoshi Kobayashi. The total process can take up to two months to prepare.
Urushi lacquer is a very special natural material, which is made from the sap of trees, which only grow in East Asian countries. This Urushi is in very limited supply. The deciduous Urushi tree takes 15 years to reach maturity and each mature tree can only supply 200 grams of sap.
The Urushi sap is then mixed with other compounds to form the lacquer. When hand applied to the surface of the pen and kept in high humidity it slowly sets (hardens) into a hard durable and lustrous finish, which is waterproof and resistant to most other materials. This special lacquered surface protects the pen in the best possible manner.
The plain Urushi lacquers have been traditionally used to decorate materials in Japan since the Johmon period (2000 years ago).
Sailor King of Pen Color Urushi Kaga Teal Blue is equipped by the legendary 21 KT gold nib in King of Pen size and comes in a wooden box with a converter and a bottle of ink.
